Guide to ISO 50001 available to download

A free guide to ISO 50001, the international energy management standard, has been published by energy consultancy Inprova Energy.

ISO 50001 supports organisations in all sectors to track, analyse and use energy more efficiently through the development of an energy management system.

Evidence shows that ISO 50001 accredited businesses are achieving energy performance improvements of 10% or more, often through measures with little or no cost, Inprova Energy said.
Introduced in 2011, ISO 50001 transforms the way organisations manage their energy, offering companies a comprehensive approach to continually improve energy performance, sustainability and their bottom line. According to the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO), it has value both as a best-practice model and as a global benchmark for climate and clean energy action. As of the end of 2015 nearly 12,000 organisations were certified to the standard -- a 77% increase from the previous year.

Implementation of the ISO 50001 standard across the commercial and industrial sectors globally could drive cumulative energy savings of as much as $600bn (62 exajoules) by 2030 and avoid 6.5 billion metric tonnes of CO2 emissions. The projected annual emissions savings are equivalent to removing 215 million passenger vehicles from the road.

The guide from Inprova Energy sets out the four key steps to obtaining ISO 50001 certification, and its Plan-Do-Check-Act continuous improvement process. This involves:

Plan -- Conduct an energy review and establish the baseline, energy performance indicators, objectives, targets and action plans that are necessary to deliver results.

Do -- Implement the energy management action plans.

Check -- Monitor and measure processes against targets.

Act -- Take action to continually improve.

Rob Leak, ISO 50001 lead auditor at Inprova Energy, said: "ISO 50001 can be easily integrated with other management systems such as ISO 9001 and 14001. As well as demonstrating environmental leadership, it helps organisations to identify energy wastage and focus energy efficiency improvements for most impact, which can lead to significant cost savings and CO2 emissions reductions."
