Why energy regulations are beneficial for organisations

Whether they're ordered by industry or government, regulations can often feel like yet another piece of admin for businesses to deal with, or even something that seems to get in the way of progression. However, a recent article on the Triple Pundit website explains in more detail how they can actually improve the way an organisation operates.

In the case of sustainable business operations, recent regulations disrupt the standard procedures and ways of thinking to allow businesses to improve their efficiency, saving them money in the long run and helping them to become more productive. ISO 50001 Energy Management Standrad, LEED Energy Efficiency standard, the Building Energy Efficiency Certificate and the EU Directive just to name a few.
One example of this is in the UK, where companies have to include greenhouse gas emissions in their annual Directors' Report. This Mandatory Carbon Reporting might seem like a time-consuming hassle at first, but it actually facilitates changes that have a positive outcome for the business in question.

The article rather helpfully compares the mandatory reporting of emissions to the way a dieter might write a diary to keep a track of their eating habits. Carbon reporting means that companies need to have a greater awareness and understanding of their energy usage and emissions, which inevitably results in lower energy consumption and improved energy efficiency.

As well as the financial and environmental benefits, energy management can create a corporate culture of social responsibility, which in turn can improve brand loyalty, brand reputation and even employee engagement.

Organisations across the globe have been choosing to take part in the international energy management standard ISO 50001, which follows procedures from implementation stage through to maintenance and improvements.

One example of such a company is 3M, which has seen a 30% reduction in energy usage since implementing the standard, as well as increased engagement among management staff and enhanced O&M practices.

Furthermore, the London South Bank University has recently set itself the target of reducing its energy usage by more than a third (35%) by the year 2020, using the ISO 50001 to help it reach this goal.

So, this serves to show that in the case of energy usage, a little regulation can go a long way towards improving a company's future prospects.
