UK initiative aims to improve energy efficiency in the industrial sector

The UK Government has launched a new fund to increase the use of energy efficient technologies in the industrial sector.
Run by the Carbon Trust, the £9.2m Industrial Energy Efficiency Accelerator (IEEA) will offer co-funding grants of between £150,000 and £1m to technology developers and industrial companies over the next four years to support demonstration projects across the UK.
The aim is to reduce the cost of energy efficient technologies and increase the number of industry-specific technologies available for a range of industrial sectors. The Accelerator also aims to address both technical and commercial challenges by providing tailored incubation support and co-funding to technology developers and start-ups.
According to the Carbon Trust, the industrial sector accounts for 17% of the UK's total end energy use, which is equivalent to over 20% of total carbon emissions. However, through the manufacturing process, up to 40% of the energy used can be lost due to inefficiency in equipment, mechanical limitations and heat loss.
This means that there is huge potential to reduce both energy consumption and emissions, and to deliver cost savings, by optimising energy use.
Al-Karim Govindji, senior manager for innovation at the Carbon Trust, commented: "For any technology developer, industrial process or plant, owners and operators want to ensure that investments are making a positive impact and driving profitability. Through the IEEA we will work collaboratively with trade associations, industry and technology providers to identify and demonstrate the best innovative opportunities for energy reduction."
Applications for the IEEA are open until January 2018, and a 'fast track' process is available for industrial firms already engaged with a technology developer and looking for funding and advice to help run a demonstration.
Between 15 and 30 pilot projects will be selected to receive funding and implementation advice. At the end of the two-year pilot phase, results from the projects will be incorporated into sector guides and presented in a series of regional events.
