"When an organization implements this standard, it improves its energy performance, and that is a direct contribution to its bottom line."

Energy management is now in the global spotlight, due to the pressing need to save energy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions worldwide. Energy-saving technologies and facilities are nly part of the methodologies for improving energy efficiency. A more sensible and systematic approach to improve an enterprise’s energy performance sustainably is to establish and implement a standardized, process-based energy management structure. Published on 15 June 2011, the ISO 50001 Energy Management System (EnMS) standard is a globally accepted framework for managing energy, providing technical and management strategies for enterprises to increase energy efficiency, reduce costs, and improve environmental performance. ISO 50001 can be used for certification and will affect up to 60% of the world’s energy use

There are currently about 190 organizations in some 26 countries now certified to ISO 50001. "Organizations that implement energy management systems have reported tremendous energy savings of 10 to 20 per cent within the first five years of adherence," says Carol Buckley, director general of the Office of Energy Efficiency at Natural Resources Canada (NRCan). "Many more countries plan to adopt ISO 50001; it's quickly becoming the global standard for energy management systems," she adds.

The fact factor behind ISO 50001

  • ISO 50001 Energy Management System Standard was created by ISO (International Organization for Standardization) as a request of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) to create an international energy management standard.
  • ISO 50001 specifies requirements for establishing, implementing, maintaining and improving an energy management system, with the purpose of enableing an organization to follow a systematic approach in achieving continual improvement of energy performance, including energy efficiency, energy use and consumption. The process can result in lower energy costs, increased commercial competitiveness and demonstrate corporate commitment to protect the environment.
  • The ISO 50001 specifies requirements applicable to energy use and consumption, including measurement, documentation and reporting, design and procurement practices for equipment, systems, processes and personnel that contribute to energy performance.
  • ISO 50001 has been designed to fit any business regardless of size and to be used independently, but it can be aligned or integrated with other management systems.
  • ISO 50001 is based on the management system model of continual improvement also used for other well-known standards such as ISO 9001 or ISO 14001. This makes it easier for organizations to integrate energy management into their overall efforts to improve quality and environmental management.

Some of the main areas of benefits

  • Centralised and comprehensive energy strategy

Improved energy efficiency and Energy performance can only be achieved effectively when a centralised, transparent and comprehensive energy strategy, like ISO 50001 is implemented.

  • Cost effectiveness

During the process more accurate management decisions can be made regarding to energy costs and consumptions according to the goals and tactics (historic and forecasted actions, opportunities); the Simplified Energy Audit can also highlight where financial resources can be found or developed for executing the improvements (technology and/ or processes).  Also the results of the audit can be applied when evaluating and prioritizing the implementation of new energy-efficient technologies and measures.

  • Commercial benefits

Being awarded by an internationally recognised certification, like ISO 50001 can elevate a business and at the same time provide stakeholders, clients and Partners a transparent benchmarking opportunity. Those larger companies, who agree with these values, have already started working towards implementing energy management systems, booking audits and expecting their suppliers to follow their footstep in order to respect and support their commitments.

  • Benefits when Tendering or/ and applying for Grants

By implementing ISO 50001 companies can potentially gain further advantage submitting a more favourably positioned application. Working towards ISO 50001 can be also creating opportunities to take part in governmental ventures and highly supported R+D projects.

  • Environmental protection

Implementing the suggestions and actions made during the development of ISO 50001 will increase the plant security; reduce energy-related risks and CO2 emissions. The increasing public awareness on environmental issues is a strong driving force for businesses to reconsider their energy policy. As part of corporate responsibility, besides making profits, organizations shall also practice their due diligence to sustainable development of the environment and community, including addressing the public concerns on climate change and resource depletion.

  • Obeying the EU Energy Efficiency Directive

The recent adoption of the EU Energy Efficiency Directive Article VIII (accepted on the 25th of October 2012, by the European Parliament) requires large companies to undertake periodic energy audits (every 4 years) and will also drive energy efficiency improvements in households, industry and transport. However if the business has implemented ISO 50001 the compulsory energy audit can be avoided.
