Energy-efficient data centre helps IT firm cut emissions

IT consulting firm Capgemini is making rapid progress towards its carbon reduction targets, thanks in part to a state-of-the-art data centre in the UK which is claimed to be one of the most sustainable facilities of its kind.
The 32,000-square-foot Swindon data centre, named Merlin, was opened in 2010. Before that, Capgemini had already been investing in improving the power efficiency of its UK data centres, for example by sourcing 100% renewable energy; installing energy-efficient lighting and moving to lights-out operation; and monitoring temperature set points and making adjustments as required to maintain an optimal power-to-processing ratio.

Unlocking the potential of energy efficiency investment

Investment in energy efficiency still lags behind renewable energy generation, despite the fact that energy efficiency is a 'win-win' for investors, according to Peter Sweatman, chief executive of consulting firm Climate Strategy & Partners.
In an article for GreenBiz, Sweatman -- who is also a rapporteur to the Energy Efficiency Financial Institutions Group (EEFIG) -- says that, in most cases, energy efficiency is a "much more reliable" investment than generation, with a much quicker payback period.

The market for enterprise energy and building management is maturing, which means we are likely to see more consolidation and verticalisation over the next few years.
This and other trends in the corporate energy management sector were recently analysed by Joseph Aamidor, a senior product management consultant focused on smart buildings, IOT and energy, in an article for Greentech Media.
Aamidor highlighted four key trends that stood out at Greentech Media's Grid Edge World Forum 2017, a conference and exhibition focused on the distributed energy system of the future.
