Industrial firms in Utah recognised for energy saving efforts

Reducing energy consumption in the industrial sector can have a big impact on carbon emissions. In Utah, for example, industrial firms are the largest energy customers, accounting for almost a third of the state's electricity consumption.
In an effort to conserve resources and reduce companies' operating costs, a voluntary programme called the Utah Industrial Energy Efficiency Challenge was established in 2010 to encourage new and ongoing investment in energy efficiency by local manufacturing and industrial businesses.

Global EMS market set for strong growth

The global energy management system (EMS) market was worth $31.3bn in 2015 and is expected to reach as much as $63.2bn by 2021, according to a new analysis.
This represents a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of around 12.4% between 2016 and 2021.
The report by Zion Market Research says that energy management systems are gradually being recognised as one of the most significant and cost-effective solutions for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, playing an active role in reducing energy consumption in the industrial, enterprise and residential sectors.

Walmart takes the lead on energy management

Walmart is working hard to reduce emissions across its business. Last November, the company set ambitious greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets that are in line with what climate science says is necessary to keep global warming below two degrees Celsius.

As part of its emissions-reduction plan, Walmart will use a combination of energy-efficiency measures, together with a commitment to source half of the company's energy needs from renewable sources, to achieve an 18% emissions reduction in its own operations by 2025. Additionally, the retail giant will work with suppliers to reduce emissions by 1 Gigaton by 2030, equivalent to taking more than 211 million passenger vehicles off of US roads and highways for a year.

Vienna Energy Forum highlights role of energy in achieving climate and development goals

The Vienna Energy Forum, which was held last week in the Austrian capital, highlighted the connections between energy, climate and development and the key role of energy in the successful implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Paris Agreement on climate.

The event brought together more than 1,650 participants from 128 countries, including heads of state, ministers, energy experts, representatives of international and non-governmental organisations, academia, civil society and the private sector. It was organised by the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO), the International Institute of Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), the Austrian Government, and Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL).
