Tesco, the famous grocery store and supermarket chain entered to the Hungarian market in 1995, making a first step into the Central Europe region when acquiring 26 S-Market stores. Today, Tesco is operating over 200 stores across the country, contributing directly over 1 percent of GDP to the country’s economy and at the same time they are the third largest employer in Hungary.

Tesco’s efforts in Hungary have been successful and their suppliers export more than £100 million worth of products from the country to the UK.

Having used a fairly basic energy management solution they decided to upgrade to a more sophisticated and highly effective energy management software. Completing their research period a pilot project was introduced using AVReporter and now a full system is in operation.

The objective was to understand energy usage for various store sections (e.g. deli, bakery, etc.) to optimize equipment operating schedules.

Specific focus points were identified in order to enable Tesco to:

  • View and analyse energy consumption and production
  • Monitor the performance of any critical equipment, as well as point out and resolve costly issues
  • Protect the life of equipment by identifying harmful voltage imbalances
  • Preserve valuable, temperature-sensitive inventory
  • Obey to corporate energy usage policies
  • Validate HVAC and lighting control system settings
  • Integrate renewable energy monitoring for sustainability initiative tracking

The AVReporter Energy Management System Project’s scope was:

  • Communication with data concentrators
  • Communication with different type of revenue meters of energy supply companies
  • Supply and configure AVReporter Intermediate
  • Edition and WebPublisher
  • Connectivity to different data sources
  • Creating multisite applications, integrating more databases

The Energy Management Software requirements were the followings:

  • Collect data from different type of meters and data concentrators (electrical, water and heat meters, etc.)
  • Reduce peak demand and power factor penalties
  • Monitoring of consumption and subscribed-power optimization
  • Cost-allocation and sub-billing
  • Monitor and calculate applied energy performance
  • Energy Performance Certification of Buildings - A policy tool to improve energy efficiency
  • Information can be accessed by web browser interface
  • Multi-User and Security Access Level Management
  • Quick report building web and desktop environments
  • Schedule report creation for management site
  • Analysis of the data by applying mathematical and statistical methods
  • Integrated data visualization on one interface
  • Collection of measurement data of more sites in one system (centralized energy management) – application of integrated energy contracts
  • Flexible language and currency switching functionality on the go

AVReporter Energy Management Software is a highly effective tool for Tesco’s facility managers gain insight into energy and site operations, while maintaining customer comfort and maximizing savings opportunities.
