New Lego China plant focusing on energy efficiency

Danish toy manufacturer Lego has recently opened an enormous new moulding plant in China - which will have efficiency and sustainability at the core of its operations, says the PRW website.
The injection moulding plant in Jiaxing measures an impressive 1.77 million square feet, and will produce 72 billion ABS bricks each year when operating at full capacity. Production actually started around one year ago; the factory is already employing some 1,2000 people, producing 70-80% of all Lego products sold in Asia.
While Lego has other factories in Denmark, Hungary, the Czech Republic and Mexico, Tim Brooks - the firm's vice president for environmental sustainability - said that the Jiaxing facility is the most sustainable.
A dedicated sustainability drive has already achieved measurable results, such as reduced packaging waste and increased energy efficiency, bringing the amount of energy used to make each Lego brick down by 16%. Lego hopes to reduce this by a further 2.5%.
In addition to this, the factory uses 100% LED lighting and its moulding machines are highly efficient. The initiative also extends to the wider community, says Brooks, with the company pledging to lower carbon dioxide emissions by 8 million pounds in Jiaxing and the surrounding area.
More recently, Lego is currently installing 20,000 solar panels on the roof of the facility. It is estimated that these will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 8.81 million pounds per year, helping them meet their promise to the local community.
Brooks also told PRW's sister publication, Plastics News, that Lego is still searching for a viable alternative to the ABS plastic used to make the bricks - of which it buys 76,000 tonnes each year. In fact, the toy manufacturer is investing $100 million in finding materials that are more sustainable, and better for the environment.
He even said that Lego's long term aim is to be "zero waste."
