Energy and sustainability management is becoming an integral part of business operations across a number of industries, and a new survey has revealed that the number of companies choosing to install an energy management system is on the rise, ACHR News reports.

According to the report conducted by Ecova, 82% of the 200 multi-site companies questioned now have an EMS at 'some' or 'all' of their facilities. The proportion of these companies with EMS systems installed in more than half of their buildings has jumped from 45% in 2013 to 68% this year, indicating a significant increase.

The report also found that the majority (92%) of respondents felt there was value in trend or telemetry data, providing them with a baseline for identifying sustainability goals and strategies, from recognising wasteful assets to managing their energy usage.

When asked what they looked for in an EMS system, nearly a quarter (24%) of the businesses currently using one cited integration with existing assets, infrastructure and technology as being the most important factor. Cost was also an important consideration.

When it comes to cost, every organisation of course wants to know what return they are going to get from their investment in energy management software.

Ecova notes that most companies will see initial payback from EMS in just 18 months. However, while the findings reveal that 52% of companies obtained ROI analysis to help them decide which EMS to purchase, around the same number were also unsure whether they were achieving their expected ROI figures.

Commenting on the report, Ecova's director of facility technology, Jamie Daubenspeck, said that the news was both good and bad: the good news is that "EMS is growing, indicating that more multi-site companies are committed to energy and sustainability management." However, he continues, "there is still work to be done by companies to more fully leverage these systems and the data insights that they provide."
