LoRa technology connecting energy management systems accelerating infrastructure

Until recently, devices connected to the Internet of Things had differing characteristics in terms of deployment, connectivity and bandwidth capacity. However, as a recent post on the Cisco Blogs website reports, an emerging wireless technology looks set to accelerate both Service Provider and Smart City services.

LoRa is one of the technologies within the Low Power Wide Area (LPWA) landscape. Whereas in the past, the range of wide area connectivity technologies for M2M and IoT applications have been limited mostly to powered devices over Wi-Fi and cellular, with the growth of digital cities comes the need for long-range access; not to mention low power that is more cost-effective.

The disruptive LoRa technology has distinct advantages that makes it perfectly suited to the mass challenges of the IoT sector, and able to conquer obstacles that Wi-Fi and cellular technologies could not.

Operating on unlicensed spectrum, it enables new services relating to smart cities and the Internet of Things. It can serve both private and public infrastructure, and is particularly beneficial for securely connecting disparate corners of a city.

Using battery-powered sensor connectivity, this relatively simple technology can be deployed in a variety of applications, from water and gas metering to waste management, traffic management, smart parking and smart energy/demand response.

Cisco, a founder of LoRa Alliance, trialled the first generation of Cisco LoRa gateway back in June 2015. It continues to work with a range of partners to create a full LoRa system for vertical customers, Smart Cities and Service Providers (SPs).

Now, numerous IoT infrastructure initiatives across Europe, Asia, the Middle East and the US are incorporating LoRa into their strategies. In Dubai, for instance, telecom operator du collaborated with Cisco and Actility to deploy the first LoRa IoT network in the UAE, as part of its smart city framework. It was initially applied to assist with asset tracking, smoke detection and environmental monitoring, sharing useful information in real time.

Thanks to its certification programme, open specifications and advancing eco-system, LoRa facilitates new services for both private (eg. Smart City, Utilities) and public (SP) solutions.
