Energy efficiency can help firms of all sizes to reduce costs and increase their competitiveness, according to a round table held in Ohio last week.

The Advanced Energy Economy Institute (AEE Institute) convened a discussion with commercial and industrial energy managers, efficiency programme and service providers, city officials and thought leaders across the state to share their experiences of implementing effective energy efficiency programmes.

The discussion highlighted successful projects completed by energy service companies in Cincinnati and throughout Ohio that have helped industrial customers -- typically large energy users -- make their facilities more efficient and competitive, significantly reducing their cost of operations.

In Ohio, the industrial sector is the largest user of energy, accounting for 32% of all electricity usage in the state. Various technologies and services, like demand response and combined heat and power, can make industrial energy use more efficient, the AEE Institute said.

At the round table, the group focused primarily on challenges surrounding the industrial efficiency sector, including financing projects, customer awareness, and improving access to data.

"Cincinnati ranks 30th among cities around the country for energy efficiency, yet the state of Ohio is leaving money on the table," said J.R. Tolbert, vice president of state policy at Advanced Energy Economy (AEE), a national business group affiliated with the AEE Institute. "There is an important role for efficiency to play in Ohio and addressing the opportunities and challenges with efficiency programmes will help the state's largest users reduce their costs."
