UK brick manufacturer Ibstock has achieved ISO 14001 accreditation for its environmental management system at its factory in Sharpthrone, the Builders Merchants Journal recently reported, meaning that all its UK production sites now hold the standard.

The International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) is an independent, non-government membership group. It is also the largest developer of voluntary international standards in the world.

ISO 14001 is the internationally-approved standard that identifies the requirements for an environmental management system, making sure that businesses boost their efficiency and environmental credentials through better use of their resources, as well as reducing their waste.

Ibstock has been granted the accreditation at its Ibstock-Kevington factory in Sharpthrone, joining all Ibstock's other UK companies in securing the standard. Ibstock Brick was the first facility to receive the ISO 14001 accreditation, back in 2001.

Commenting on the news, Ibstock's technical director – Darren Bowkett – said that the internationally-recognised endorsement "is testimony to the hard work of our entire workforce, and the importance Ibstock places upon minimising our impact on the environment and focussing on sustainability."

It also provides recognition for Ibstock's "culture of continuous improvement," which is intended to ensure the company effectively delivers on its sustainability commitments, he added.

Despite achieving the accreditation, Bowkett stressed that the company was still focused on driving sustainability even further through its operations, including an innovative £54m brickworks in Leicestershire that will set "new standards for energy efficiency, water and waste recovery."
