The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification system was developed by the United States Green Building Council (USGBC) in 1998. Many commercial facilities around the World, over  44,000 have achieved their Bronze, Silver, Gold, or Platinum credentials since.  Apart from the fact of LEED certified facilities use resources a lot more efficiently than non-LEED buildings and offer healthier work and living environments for their occupants LEED buildings also have higher tenant retention rates and most importantly greater asset values for their owners.

To aim for the LEED certification successfully energy management, monitoring systems should be applied. AVReporter Energy Management Software has got a great track record; check out our case study on an office building complex that has received the Platinum (highest) level of LEED.

Many hotels, banks, data centers and now entertainment complexes are looking to apply LEED.

The new Horseshoe Casino in Baltimore has received LEED Gold certification, prompting the company behind the project to seek accreditation for all of its new developments.

Baltimore Business Journal reports that Caesars Entertainment, the firm at the helm of the casino, has been quick to see the benefits of sustainable energy, highlighting how it profits the business and its employees alike. "As soon as we start the planning process for our new developments, we are considering ways to make our buildings part of a sustainable future," said Greg Miller, Caesars Entertainment executive vice president of domestic development.

He added that by given energy efficiency due consideration, the casino has reaped instant rewards and has created "vibrant places for our guests to relax and play, and for our employees to work."

No expense was spared on the grand casino, which opened only a few months ago, with costs reaching $442 million, but Caesars Entertainment suggested that it's crucial that businesses begin to factor in energy efficiency measures in the budget.

Horseshoe Baltimore received LEED Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council after it achieved a score of 61 out of a possible 100. Gold is the second-highest rating a building can achieve, with developments needing to amass over 80 points to become LEED Platinum certified.

One of the factors which ensured the casino met the Gold specifications included having a design that facilities energy management, such as being able to collect and store storm water.

With the building standing at two storeys tall and offering 335,000 of space, the benefits of implementing energy management systems are obvious as the need to be as efficent as possible.
