A new campaign has been launched to promote the adoption of global energy standard ISO 50001, the Climate Group website reports.

It is widely regarded by experts that the standard for assessing energy management system can help businesses throughout the world lower their energy usage and reduce costs. The Climate Group's EP100 campaign has seen many businesses pledge to double their energy productivity, which ISO 50001 can help with as well.
With this in mind, the 7th Clean Energy Ministerial conference in San Francisco, US, saw the launch of the Energy Management Campaign, by the Clean Energy Ministerial and International Partnership for Energy Efficiency Cooperation.

The campaign has a goal of encouraging 50,001 leaders from the world's governments, industries and businesses to share their energy reduction goals by signing up to the energy management system by 2020.

According to the campaign, the widespread implementation of ISO 50001 throughout the world's commercial and industrial sectors could generate US$600 billion in savings and remove 6,500 MT of C02 emissions. Going forwards, estimated reductions in emissions by 2030 could be the equivalent of 215 million vehicles being taken off the roads.

The ISO 50001 standard provides businesses with best practice guidance and a global benchmark for taking action against climate change and improving their energy reduction efforts. Those who have already adopted the standard are reaping the benefits, with 10% energy performance improvements and significant cost savings, with little or no disruption to operations.

The global, collaborative nature of ISO 50001 collates best practices from all over the world, including Germany, Mexico, Canada and the US.

In support of the standard, Pedro Joaquín Coldwell - secretary of energy for Mexico - said that it "provides a consistent and measurable way, across countries, for organisations to increase energy productivity and reduce carbon emissions."

The Energy Management Campaign "will play an important role in facilitating the world's transition to a clean energy economy through global cooperation and public and private partnerships," he added.
