A medical centre based in Elmira, New York, has just completed an energy efficiency retrofit that will save it millions of dollars in energy and operating costs over the course of the contract, Energy Manager Today reports.

The 127-year-old Arnot Ogden Medical Center (AOMC) has been renovated and expanded numerous times over the years, which meant that the disparate building designs and energy systems were not matching up.
But the new comprehensive energy retrofit programme, implemented by ABM's Building & Energy Solutions Group, guarantees to streamline operations and make significant energy savings.
The so-called Bundled Energy Solutions program includes equipment upgrades, improvements to infrastructure, implementation and ongoing maintenance. It also offers financing options to help the AOMC fund the project using future savings made by their reduced energy usage.

ABM carried out a full audit of the centre's building infrastructure and equipment requirements, using an Energy Star Scorecard to align its energy efficiency levels with those of similar buildings across the US.

The group then identified which energy-saving measures would have the most impact on the facility's overall energy consumption, using the US Department of Energy's Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP) Technology Deployment Matrix.

Some of the upgrades performed at the AOMC included replacing outdated boilers; replacing old chillers with energy efficient ones featuring automated controls; repairing existing mechanical systems to boost their efficiency; implementing power management tools in the site's 4,800 computers; conducting building envelope repairs; and reducing electricity waste by replacing outdated electrical transformers with modern, energy efficient ones.

The project also replaced the hospital's outdated manual energy management system (EMS) with one that is web-based, fully automated and can be accessed remotely from smart devices.

As well as making annual energy savings of $283,000 and annual operational savings of $164,000 - adding up to $9 million over the next 20 years, and $14.5 million over the contract's lifetime - the hospital will now save 20% of its annual energy use, raising its Energy Star score from 21 out of 100 to 70.
