Energy Efficiency Program Could Save Royal Bank of Scotland £7.5m

The Royal Bank of Scotland's new programme, focused on green innovations and energy-saving technologies, is on track to save the company more than £300,000 during the first year of implementation, Business Green reports.

The Innovation Gateway initiative has so far proven to be a huge success, with early figures showing that just two months after being launched, the programme is expected to lower the company's carbon emissions by 126 tonnes a year, while saving approximately 4.5 million litres of water. In terms of financial gain, this equates to savings of £301,467 during the first 12 months.
What's more, if this were to be rolled out across all of the bank's property portfolio, analysts predict that RBS could reduce its CO2 emissions by 40,000 tonnes and save more than 200 million litres of water – meaning financial savings could soar to £7.5m.

The programme's philosophy involves embracing greener technologies in order to reduce energy usage. At the test site – RBS' global headquarters at Gogarburn, on the outskirts of Edinburgh – these innovations have been so successful that the company is now looking into what other tech it can incorporate into its daily operations.

One example of the technology used so far is the Ureco, a 'bio cap' for urinals that lowered the test site's water use by a staggering 97%. This alone could save the bank some £300,000 if used across its entire estate.

A further example is the Powerstudio app, which turns computers off when not in use and, as a result, means that the company now uses 91% less electricity to power its computers at the test site. Again, if this were to be applied across all RBS sites, it would save 5,000 tonnes of CO2 each year and around £1.2m.

Commenting on the success of the model, RBS' head of customer innovation, Marcela Navarro, said that it had been intended to deliver "change on an epic scale;" but even she seemed bowled over by the results so far, stating: "For us to have achieved this in just one year is phenomenal [...] this is only the beginning."

The findings represent the future savings that can be made by investing in green technology now; and, as RBS has proven, once companies begin reaping the financial rewards they may never look back.
